A river is more than a waterway. It is a keeper of history, a source of life, and a thread that binds communities across generations. For Kolkata, Adi Ganga is all of these. This World Environment Day, it became the focus of a collective movement to restore a river that has shaped the city's cultural and spiritual identity for centuries.
From 5th to 7th June 2026, The Art of Living, in partnership with the Namami Gange Initiative, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and the State Mission for Clean Ganga, West Bengal, brought together volunteers, youth, devotees, local residents, and public leaders for a three-day Adi Ganga Cleanliness & Awareness Campaign at Sadar Ghat, Kalighat. Inspired by the vision of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the initiative united the community around a shared purpose - to revive a sacred river through collective action.
What unfolded was far more than a clean-up drive. Riverbanks were cleared, saplings were planted, dustbins were distributed to nearby temples, and conversations on responsible waste management reached hundreds of people. As the days progressed, devotional music, bhajan gatherings, and a magnificent Ganga Aarti transformed the campaign into a celebration of the deep connection between nature, culture, and spirituality.
The impact was tangible: 230+ volunteers joined hands, 300+ kilograms of waste were removed, 100+ dustbins were distributed, and 500+ saplings found new homes. Beyond these achievements, the campaign inspired a renewed commitment to protecting Adi Ganga, reinforcing the idea that rivers flourish when communities become their custodians.
Dr. Indranil Khan emphasised community participation and lauded The Art of Living's environmental and river rejuvenation initiatives
More than the numbers, however, was the spirit behind them. Restoring a river is not the work of a single organisation or a single weekend - it is a continuous journey. The efforts to revive Adi Ganga continue through sustained community action and collective stewardship. When communities come together in service, even a keeper of history like Adi Ganga can begin a new chapter - one that grows stronger with every passing day.
